The thing about conferences is you can never predict how they will go. I run conferences for my JOB, and the slightest thing can take a conference into a tailspin. The only downfall at the RWA2012 National Conference was the temperature in the meeting rooms – like sub-zero, but good thing I bought a heavy jacket. It’s one of the rules of hotel-centric conferences, no matter where they are – they keep the temperature on the near side of freezing.
Other than that what did I learn? Well, way too much, but hopefully, at least 50 percent of it will stick.
Cherry Adair ROCKS! Her workshop was fantastic. It was recorded so grab it. She goes into great detail about how to write an action scene and layering on the elements that help ensure it works in the readers’ minds as well as delivers the goods for the character and the scene. And the action is not only about fighting, it also applies to the love scenes.
Heather Graham ROCKS! I had a chance to hang out with her for a few minutes at a cocktail party on Saturday before the Rita and Golden Heart Award presentations. She is hosting an event called Writers for New Orleans December 14-16. There will be parties centered around the 100th birthday of Bram Stocker and the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic (2012)…So, New Orleans, vampires, ghost ships, sounds like a road trip, who’s in?
Take risks – yep, that’s the tip. Take risks with your writing. Don’t play it safe – get out there on that ledge and write that story that is your story. You can do it. So just write.
I intend to keep focused — Because I am ready to do just that!
And yes, I did pitch, and had a request, now it’s all about delivery, right?
