Rounding the corner, broom stick in tow, or was that a long-stemmed crystal champagne glass, Nikki’s sister waltzed into the Pritzker Garden in a soft pink diamond-encrusted gown. As the rest of the room gasped, Nikki spun toward the staircase, ready to head back to Ray and that perfect sexual haze, but she could feel Edie’s hazel-eyed glare ripping through her back.
Might as well take the punch in the gut now, she thought, and turning, faced her elder sister to hear the tune she’d heard a thousand times before.
“Nicolette, I see you decided to join us.”
“How could I miss the family’s biggest fundraiser of the year.”
“Easy,” Edie remarked, lifting the flute to her lips. “You could have kept your ass at home.”
