Well firstly, I’d not be myarring into the British aristocracy, but allowing the counterfactual, I’d have prepared with professionals, not just about content but posture, inflection, timing of pauses, use of artefacts and distractors and have had one or too apparently extemporaneous remarks to nuke what I didn’t like. I’ve done scaled down versions of that for job interviews, sales presentations and committee meetings. Yes, Fran, Very sensible, I’m sure. Do you actually judge someone’s intelligence in something like this? Are you aware that are different types of intelligence, or do you measure intelligence on what you think is right or proper? I know many highly intelligent people who would do badly at this sort of thing, because they’re simply not highly skilled verbally. Doesn’t mean their stupid. What a narrow and hugely subjective view of what constitutes intelligence. I can think of fantastic artists I know. Ask them about their work and they’re tongue tied. I teach into a University course in which students have to present verbally. Some do very well. Others no matter how hard they work at it, are far weaker. Doesn’t make them stupid. Fancy judging someone’s intelligence by how well they do at a press conference.
